Introduction

Welcome to the world of Sharon Creech's Newberry Award winning  novel, Walk Two Moons. In this adventure, you will travel with Sal and her zany  grandparents as they journey to Lewiston, Idaho. Along the way, you will explore and research some of the Southwest's most famous sites, and experience the range of emotions Sal encounters as she searches to find her mother,  and in the process discovers many revelations about herself.You will also examine what characteristics are essential in creating a Newberry Award winning novel , and learn about the author of this captivating book .



 



The Task

Working with a partner you will:

  • Use the internet to research Sharon Creech,  the author of Walk Two Moons,  and answer questions about her life.
  • Research the Newberry Award,and the criteria needed to nominate your favorite book.
  • Explore a famous Southwestern site, and investigate the neccessary information before visiting.

The Process

The following instructions will make completion of your task easy! Please read ALL directions carefully and thoroughly.

  1. First, click here.  Next, click on "Open It" and print the questionnaire. 
  2. Once you have printed your document, click here and read the biography of Sharon Creech. After you have read the biography, answer the questionnaire.
  3. Next, click here. Read the information on the Newberry Award. After you've read the criteria needed to receive the award, write a paragraph nominating a favorite book you've read. In your paragraph be sure to write the reasons your book is qualified to win. 
  4. Sal visited both Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park on her journey.Now, you must choose which place you and your partner would like to visit. After you have decided, click here for the requirements you must meet when visiting your chosen place. Click open it, and print these requirements. Now, click here to open the site and choose your particular location you would like to visit.Your choices are Yellowstone National Park ( Wyoming ), or Mt. Rushmore ( South Dakota ). After getting into the web site, click on the state that contains your destination. Then click on the site you chose and use this site to learn everything a tourist would need to know about this famous American landmark before making the trip.Then complete the sheet.

Conclusion

In this journey you have traveled along the same path as Sal and her grandparents. You have explored two famous landmarks in the United States, as well as discovered valuable information for planning a vacation. In doing this, you have also researched a well-known young adult author, and a prestigeous literary award. We hope you have enjoyed this experience and learned a lot from your trip!
