The BSIS news program, WBSI, was selected as a winner through the awards program of the South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. WBSI was created and managed by our previous Media Specialist Pat Bridges. The news team, comprised of twelve 6th grade students, regularly taped news programs created by BSIS classes as well as other events at the school. Winners were recognized at an awards luncheon during the spring conference in Charleston, SC, on May 5, 2000. | |

DOLPHIN DAZE, the newsletter of Beech Springs Intermediate School has won awards for several years. Most recently, it was selected as a 2005-2006 winner in the "Rewards for Excellence" program. This program is sponsored by the South Carolina Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association. Congratulations to Lori Arledge who produces this fine publication. Lori Arledge, technology coordinator,also received an award of excellence for our school web page. |

Beech Springs is honored to be named a 2000 finalist in in the Carolina First Palmetto's Finest search for the best schools in South Carolina. Schools are judged on student achievement, administrative leadership, and community support by colleagues and peers. We were also recognized for our emphasis on enrichment through the performing arts and through service learning projects. | |

General Colin L. Powell visited Beech Springs on Tuesday, December 14, 1999 where he spoke to over 1000 students, faculty and honored guests. General Powell talked to students about working hard, studying hard and staying away from those who would lead them to do wrong. He also answered questions from the students. General Powell gave BSIS a day that they will never forget! | |

BSIS was recognized in 2000 as 1 of 28 schools in South Carolina’s Schools of Promise Initiative that meets the standards as a “Flagship” School. This year’s school theme is the “Flagship Dolphin’s Voyage of Promise”. Our students are on their voyage of scholarship and citizenship. By visiting destinations throughout the year, we will develop the “total child” by promoting each child’s academic learning, potential, and creativity. | |

On Wednesday, May 15, 2002, seventy-six schools got the red carpet treatment from State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum. This award is an initiative that recognizes schools with outstanding family-friendly environments. The winning schools receive red carpets with the state seal to display in their school lobbies. A total of 304
schools received awards: 159 Gold and 145 Silver. Among
elementary schools, 68 won Gold awards and 118 won Silver. Among
middle schools, three won Golds and 20 won Silvers. Among high
schools, 50 won Golds and five won Silvers. Thirty-one career centers
won Golds and two centers received Silver awards. Seven special
schools won Gold awards.
Each winning school receives an award flag, a certificate and a portion of $3 million in state funds earmarked for the awards program. The financial award is determined by several factors, including the type of award received, student enrollment, student attendance, teacher attendance and dropout rates. The minimum amount for a Gold award is $1,500, and the minimum for a Silver award is $1,000.
