1.

Each student will need a map outline of SC with the following marked but not labeled:  Duncan, Spartanburg, Greenville, Sassafras Mountain, Aiken, Columbia, Florence, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, I-26, I-85, I-20, I-95, I-77, I-385, Saluda River, Tyger River, Broad River, Catawba River, Wateree River, Congaree River, Santee River, Pee Dee River, and the Edisto River.

2.

Introduce students to the outdoor learning center and  walking map of SC known as SCALE (South Carolina Academic Learning Environment) located in Duncan.

Locate Duncan on a class map of SC.  Teach cardinal points on a map:  north, south, east, and west.

Students will locate Duncan on their map and label it.  Students will also label north, south, east, and west on their maps.

Present locations identified on SCALE:  Duncan, Spartanburg, Greenville, Sassafras Mountain, Columbia, Aiken, Florence, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston.  Locate on a class map.

Students will locate each place on their map and label.

Present Interstates that traverse SC and are located on SCALE:  I-26, I-85, I-20, I-95, I-77, I-385.  Discuss odd number highways travel north/south and even number highways travel east/west.    Locate on a class map.

Students will locate and write the number of each  interstate on their SC map using this web page activity. Identify cities through which the interstates pass and cities that are connected by the interstate(s).

Present the rivers of SC that are located on SCALE: Saluda, Tyger, Enoree, Broad, Catawba, Wateree, Congaree, Santee, Cooper, Pee Dee.  Locate on a class map.

Students will locate and label the rivers on their map.

Prepare to take students on a virtual tour of SCALE.

With maps in hand, students take a virtual tour of SCALE using this web page activity.

Prepare to take students to the SCALE sit.  Each student must have his/her labeled SC map.

On the SCALE site, determine north, south, east, and west.  Identify and walk to Sassafras Mountain and to the cities marked on site.

On site, identify and walk along the Interstates.

On site, identify and walk the rivers.

Prepare directions for teams of students to follow on site with a specific final locale. (Scavenger hunt)

Ex. Begin at Spartanburg and go east  on Interstate 26.  Continue on until Interstate 95.  Name the river(s) you have crossed.  Go north on I-95.  Go west on Interstate 20.  Stop at the first city.

Ex.  Begin on Interstate 85 at the Georgia border.  Go north.  What river do you cross?  Go south on Interstate 385.  Go east on Interstate 26.  Stop at the first city.

Ex.  Begin at Interstate 95 at the NC state line near Florence.  Go south.  Go west on Interstate 20.  What river do you cross on I-20?  Stop at the next city.

Ex.   From Charleston, go west on I-26.  Turn south on I-95.  What river do you cross as you move toward the Georgia state line?  Go northwest following the Savannah River until you reach I-20.  Go east on I-20.  What city is southwest of I-20?  Stop at the next city on I-20.

Culminating Assessment:  Students follow directions.
