School Psychologists’ Role in Public Schools School psychologists may provide many services for students, parents, and educators in public schools. Services include but are not limited to individual psycho-educational evaluation of children and youth in the areas of personal-social adjustment, ability, academic achievement, sensory and perceptual motor functioning, and environmental/cultural influences. The identification of problem areas is followed by attempts at designing effective interventions. Teachers and parents frequently request classroom observations, which may be helpful in planning for the daily education of the students involved. Interventions may include behavior management programs, referrals to appropriate special programs or agencies, and recommendations for specific teaching strategies. School psychologists also provide in-service training to faculty and staff on various topics. Handouts for educators are frequently used. Consultation and collaboration with educators, parents, and other professionals is a large component of the work of a school psychologist. Communication with other sectors of the community such as social services and the medical community is essential in attempting to facilitate the education and well being of all of our students. |
